Steps to Reduce EMF/EMR in Your Home
Technology is racing ahead. Unfortunately, health regulations are not keeping up. In Australia, ARPANSA (our radiation authority) offers guidelines , not standards. These are outdated and unrealistic for today's tech-heavy world.
Europe has already taken steps to protect its people from "electrosmog." While we wait for similar action here, there are things you can do now to protect your home and your health.
Easy First Steps to Reduce EMF/EMR in Your Home in Sydney
Start with these simple habits:
Wait before putting your phone to your ear. When a call connects, radiation peaks. Count to one before speaking.
Avoid Bluetooth and AirPods. Choose AirTubes instead. They don't heat your head and keep radiation away from your brain.
Use speakerphone or wired headphones whenever possible.
Switch to airplane mode at night, or keep your phone out of the bedroom entirely.
Don't carry your phone against your body. If you must, put it on airplane mode.
Replace Bluetooth devices like keyboards and mice with cabled ones.
Make Your Sydney Home a Low-EMF Zone
Take these extra steps at home:
Shut off TVs and computers at night.
Put your Wi-Fi modem on a timer. Turn it off while you sleep.
Request an analogue meter. SMART meters send constant signals and can raise EMF levels in your home.
Rearrange your bedroom. Avoid sleeping on a wall that backs onto a meter box, fridge, or oven.
Avoid electric blankets. Use natural bedding instead.
Move old alarm clocks further away from your body. Every bit of distance helps.
Protect Your Kids from EMR
Children absorb more EMF than adults. Here's how to protect them:
Avoid handing kids wireless tablets or phones. Download content and use airplane mode.
Use screen mirroring for big-screen viewing instead of handing them a device.
Place iPads on a table instead of their lap.
Never scroll over your pregnant belly. This can raise risks of miscarriage or long-term developmental issues. See study on
"Prenatal and postnatal exposure to cell phone use and behavioral problems in children" and
"Cell phone use and behavioural problems in young children."
"When electrical properties are considered, a child's head's absorption can be over two times greater, and absorption of the skull's bone marrow can be ten times greater than adults" See study about "Exposure Limits: The underestimation of absorbed cell phone radiation, especially in children".
Steps to Reduce EMF/EMR in Your Home Through Smart Device Choices
Ask yourself: Do I really need a smart fridge or microwave? Each smart device adds more EMF to your space.
Unplug unused electronics.
Switch to LED lighting. Compact fluoros can emit dirty electricity.
What About EMF Protection Products?
There are many products that claim to block EMFs, crystals, stickers, harmonisers, and more. However, based on experience, none offer complete protection. The best defence is changing your habits.

What actually causes high EMF readings in a home
After 38+ years on the tools, the pattern is familiar. The highest readings we find in Northern Beaches homes usually trace back to a handful of causes:
Wiring faults. Incorrectly wired circuits — things like neutral-to-earth faults or "borrowed" neutrals left over from old renovations — create magnetic fields far stronger than any Wi-Fi router. They're also electrical safety issues in their own right, which is why this is electrician's work.
A meter box or switchboard on a bedroom wall. Very common in older peninsula homes: the consumer mains run directly behind a bed head, and the sleeper spends eight hours a night in the strongest field in the house.
Solar inverters and their cable runs mounted on living-area or bedroom walls.
Dirty electricity from cheap LED drivers, dimmers and compact fluorescent lamps feeding interference back through the home's wiring.
Appliance clusters — fridge, oven or air conditioner compressor backing onto a sleeping area through a thin internal wall.
What an EMR inspection involves
An inspection is measurement, not guesswork. We test room by room with calibrated meters:
Magnetic fields (the ones caused by wiring and appliances), with particular attention to bed heads and kids' rooms.
Radio frequency levels from Wi-Fi, smart meters, cordless phones and nearby transmitters.
Body voltage at the bed — how much of the home's electrical environment you're actually coupling to while you sleep.
You get the actual readings, an explanation of what's normal and what's elevated, and — the part most EMF consultants can't give you — identification of exactly which circuit, fault or appliance is responsible.
What rectification actually looks like
Most effective fixes are electrical work, not gadgets:
Correcting wiring faults. Fixing the fault usually drops the reading immediately, and leaves the home electrically safer as a bonus.
Rerouting or rebalancing circuits that run behind beds.
Demand switches that automatically cut power to bedroom circuits when nothing is drawing current — dead circuits emit nothing while you sleep.
Repositioning — sometimes the honest answer is moving the bed, the clock radio or the Wi-Fi router, and we'll tell you when that's all it takes.
Because we're licensed electricians, the testing and the fixing come from the same person. No hand-off, no second contractor, no products to sell you.
Common questions
How long does testing take? A typical home takes a couple of hours, longer if we find wiring faults worth chasing down.
Do EMF blocking products work? As covered above — stickers, crystals and harmonisers don't hold up when you put a meter next to them. Habit changes and wiring fixes do.
Is testing only worthwhile if I'm worried about health? No — a good portion of the high readings we find are caused by genuine wiring faults that any electrician would want fixed regardless.
